Leaves like little umbrellas—glossy leaflets arranged in a circle on each stem. Arboricola stays smaller and bushier than the big schefflera, so it works as a tabletop plant or a floor plant if you let it go. Green is the classic; variegated forms show up cream-and-gold on the same shape.

Bright, indirect light. Water when the top of the soil is dry. It is a tough indoor shrub: it will drop a few leaflets if it dries out hard or sits in a dark corner, then put out new ones when you correct course.

Light: Bright indirect. Can take some morning sun.
Water: Dry down, then water thoroughly. Don’t leave it soggy.
Soil: Well-draining houseplant mix.
Habit: Upright, branching. Pinch to keep it full.
Pet note: Toxic if chewed.
