Blue Star Fern
Phlebodium aureum ‘Blue Star’
Not your grandmother’s fern. Blue Star holds wide, wavy fronds in a cool blue-green that looks almost dusty in low light and electric in bright shade. The rhizomes crawl along the surface of the pot like little felted paws—leave them sitting on top of the mix; they are not a sign you need to bury anything.
Easier than most ferns. It likes moisture but forgives a missed watering better than a maidenhair. Bright, indirect light. Keep the mix evenly damp, not soggy. A chunky, airy potting mix (think orchid bark mixed with peat or coco) suits the way it grows in the wild—on trees, not in heavy dirt.
Light: Bright indirect to medium. Direct sun will scorch the blue.
Water: Evenly moist. Let the very top dry slightly between waterings.
Humidity: Average home is fine; it prefers a little extra.
Soil: Light, chunky, well-draining mix.
Pet note: Generally considered non-toxic.
