Latham red raspberry (Rubus idaeus 'Latham') is a classic, time-tested summer-bearing (floricane) variety. This vigorous, upright, thorny plant features sturdy canes (often pruned to 12-24 inches or similar) and a robust fibrous root system ready to establish quickly in well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-6.8). A reliable favorite since the 1920s, this June-bearing raspberry produces one heavy mid-summer crop (ripening mid-June to mid-July, depending on location) of large, firm, bright-red to deep-red berries—medium to large in size, with excellent sweet flavor and good texture—perfect for fresh eating, freezing, canning, jams, jellies, or baking.
Self-pollinating and self-fruitful (yields increase with multiple plants nearby), plant it this year in full sun, provide support if needed for the canes, and prune spent floricanes after harvest—it will root in strongly and typically deliver your first bountiful harvest next year, with consistent high production thereafter. Extremely cold-hardy in zones 3-8 (ideal for northern climates, high elevations, and even Canada), disease-resistant, vigorous, and adaptable, it's an outstanding, low-fuss choice for productive home gardens!
