Jewel black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis 'Jewel') is a premium, summer-bearing (floricane) variety. This vigorous, upright, thorny shrub features sturdy canes (often pruned to 12-24 inches) and a robust fibrous root system ready to establish quickly in well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.8).
A highly regarded cultivar (Bristol x Dundee cross from 1973), Jewel is prized for its large, glossy black berries with superb rich, sweet-tart raspberry flavor and firm texture—excellent for fresh eating, jams, jellies, pies, preserves, baking, or freezing.
It ripens early to mid-summer (late June to July, concentrated season) with heavy, consistent yields. Self-pollinating and self-fruitful (yields increase with multiple plants nearby), plant it this year in full sun, provide support for the arching canes if needed, and prune spent floricanes after harvest—it will root in strongly and typically deliver your first bountiful crop next year, with reliable high production thereafter. Vigorous, widely adapted, relatively disease-resistant, and cold-hardy in zones 4-8 (or 5-8 in some sources), it's a top, flavorful choice for productive home gardens!
