The bare root York elderberry (Sambucus canadensis 'York') is a premium, vigorous American elderberry plant.
A standout cultivar prized for producing the largest berries among elderberries—huge, heavy clusters of deep purple-black, juicy fruit ripening in late summer (August-September, often 1-2 weeks after varieties like Adams or Nova)—with excellent sweet-tart flavor ideal for jams, jellies, pies, syrups, wine, or medicinal uses (always cook berries; raw seeds can be toxic).
This multi-stemmed deciduous shrub grows 6-12 feet tall and wide at maturity, boasting fragrant creamy-white flower heads in late spring/early summer, glossy green foliage turning yellow in fall, and wildlife appeal (birds adore the berries). Partially self-fertile but yields soar with cross-pollination (pair with Adams variety). Plant this year in full sun to partial shade, moist to wet sites (tolerates poor drainage), and prune annually for vigor—it will root in strongly and typically fruit in 2-3 years. Extremely cold-hardy in zones 3-9, pest- and disease-resistant, adaptable, and highly productive, it's a fantastic choice for edible landscapes, hedges, or home orchards!
