The bare root #1 Adams elderberry is a premium-grade, vigorous American elderberry plant shipped dormant with exposed roots for straightforward planting.
This classic, native heirloom variety is prized for its large, heavy clusters of fragrant white flower heads in late spring/early summer, followed by abundant dangling bunches of dark purple-black berries ripening in late summer (August-September). The sweet-tart berries are excellent for jams, jellies, pies, syrups, wine, or medicinal uses (cook before eating; raw seeds can be toxic).
A multi-stemmed deciduous shrub reaching 6-12 feet tall and wide at maturity, it offers glossy green foliage, wildlife attraction (birds love the berries), and ornamental appeal with lovely fall color. Self-fertile but yields increase dramatically with cross-pollination (pair with another variety like York or Nova).
